The United States Women’s 8 showed why they are No. 1 in the world as they went pretty much wire to wire to win their second-straight Olympic gold.

The U.S. Women’s 8 completed the race in 6:10.59 as they fairly easily held of challenges from silver medalists Canada and bronze medalists Netherlands.

Thanks to a steady stroke called out by veteran coxswain Mary Whipple, the women, who train in Princeton, N.J., paced the race and pushed straight through the finish.

The gold was the second for Abington’s Susan Francia and New Jersey transplant Caroline Lind. Both said going into the game that anything short of gold would have been a disappointment. That’s because the American boat hasn’t lost a race in about seven years and was expected to easily win the gold.

Francia held back tears of joy as she received her medal after the event. Lind just smiled ear to ear as she received the gold.

Just the day before the U.S. Men's 8 fell three-tenths of a second short of a bronze medal.
