Will the Saints Go Marching to Victory?

Who will win the Eagles opener?

Fans might expect a shootout Sunday as the Eagles host the Saints but can a Birds team that will likely be without its leader be able to keep up with the high-octane New Orleans attack?

Even if Donovan McNabb doesn’t play fans should still expect the Birds to score. The Saints boast a possibly record-breaking offense but their defense doesn’t exactly strike fear into opposing offenses.

Last week the Saints D picked off three passes but they were facing Matthew Stafford in his first pro start. And despite the inexperienced opponent the Saints only managed a single sack.

Kevin Kolb should be pestered somewhat by the Saints defense but if he holds onto the ball he should have some time to throw.

Compare the Saints defensive performance to the Birds who rode seven turnovers and five sacks to a dismantling 38-10 victory over Carolina.

Quarterback Drew Brees leads the Saints into Philly after tearing apart Detroit 45-27 last week. Brees was masterful passing for 358 yards and six touchdowns against the lowly Lions.

But don’t expect Brees to have the same level of success against an Eagles defensive unit featuring Asante Samuel, Sheldon Brown, Ellis Hobbs and Joselio Hanson at the corners.

Despite the Eagles high-powered defensive attack a shutout of Brees seems unlikely. He just has too many weapons (Devery Henderson, Marques Colston, Jeremy Shockey and Lance Moore) to not get through at some points during the game.

Despite Kolb likely starting under center the Birds should be able to up keep up with Brees. Expect big numbers from running back Brian Westbrook, tight end Brent Celek and possession receiver Jason Avant as Kolb checks down passes to the guys underneath.

The Birds run game could also feel some power from both B-West and “Shady” McCoy. Don’t be surprised if the duo combines for more than 100 yards on the ground.

The over/under was set to about 46 for the Birds’ home opener. That’s probably about accurate for this game.

This was also tabbed as one of those pick ‘em contests by the handicappers. We pick the Saints by a field goal but wouldn’t be surprised if special teams play the difference giving the Birds the advantage.

Prediction: Saints 27- Eagles 24
