Westbrook's Hazy Future

2nd concussion leaves more questions than answers

“Football right now for Brian Westbrook is not the important thing.”

Ominous words from Eagles Head Coach Andy Reid about the future of his star running back.

B-West was derailed Sunday after taking a hit on a screen against the Chargers. He was able to stand up and walk off the field but he was foggy, Reid said.

“It was another big hit that caused this,” said Reid.

This latest concussion knocked Westbrook out just three weeks after he left the Birds Week 7 win over Washington after suffering a concussion.

That concussion along with a nagging ankle injury kept Westbrook out for two games.

He returned to the field Sunday but only lasted into the third quarter before suffering this latest setback in San Diego.

Westbrook’s future with the Eagles -- let alone in the NFL -- remain hazy.

“We will take every precautionary measure we can, it’s No. 1 about Brian,” said Reid.

But, was this second concussion preventable?

Doctors had cleared B-West to fly against the Bolts and the team tried all they could to protect him.

“We took every precautionary measure we could before but it happened again,” Reid said.

In the meantime, the Eagles needed to plan for life with Westbrook. They leaned heavily on back up LeSean McCoy and fullback Leonard Weaver when Westbrook missed both the Cowboys and Giants games. The team should again turn to those backs as well as Eldra Buckley and yet-to-be active P.J. Hill while Westbrook is on the mend.

They could also look for outside help. Too bad Larry Johnson was reportedly snagged up by the Bengals.
