Werth Homers, Phillies Beat Pirates 4-3

J.A. Happ worked three solid innings to bring the Phils a win

Jayson Werth homered and J.A. Happ worked three solid innings to lead the Philadelphia Phillies to a 4-3 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Werth hit his third home run of spring training on Saturday, leading off the fourth inning against Hayden Penn. Chase Utley added two singles and drove in a run for the Phillies, who took both of the weekend's exhibition games at Citizens Bank Park.

Happ allowed one run and five hits, completing a spring training in which he posted a 3.79 ERA in 21 1-3 innings. He is slated to be the Phillies' No. 4 starter this season.

The defending NL champions will open the regular season Monday against the Nationals in a game in which President Barack Obama will throw out the first pitch.

The Pirates return to PNC Park to open their season Monday against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Last season, Happ began the year in the bullpen after losing the No. 5 job to Chan Ho Park, but eventually worked his way into the rotation. He then dealt with rumors that had him going to Toronto in a deal for Roy Halladay. Through it all, he went 12-4 with a 2.93 ERA.

He's more relaxed this season.

“It was a less-stressful spring, there's no doubt about that,” Happ said. “It was nice and low-key, and I'm happy flying under the radar. The confidence level is better overall, just after having a full year in last year and having success. I'll just try and carry that into this year.”

Paul Maholm tossed three innings for Pittsburgh, giving up two runs on five hits with one strikeout.

“We're ready to start the season,” Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. “We've been ready. We'll work out tomorrow and crank it up Monday. I'd say we've been ready for about 10 days at least.”
