The Mayor's Cup: A Philly Football Showdown

College football in Philly opens when the Temple Owls take on the Villanova Wildcats in the Mayor’s Cup Thursday night at Lincoln Financial Field.

The Mayor’s Cup -- a Philadelphia college football showdown -- s the 09-10 season opener for both squads.

The last time Temple and Nova played each other was in 2003, the Wildcats walked away with an overtime victory -- an upset on paper, considering that Villanova is Division I-AA and Temple is Division I-A.

Nova is coming off a solid year in which they went to the quarterfinals of the Football Championship Subdivision -- a feat that helped earn them a No. 5 ranking this year.

Temple won five games last season -- a good year for them considering they earned 10 wins in the past three seasons combined.

The last time Temple beat Villanova was thirty years ago, so you can bet this year’s game will be a battle of pride.

The 2009 Mayor’s Cup goes down at 7 p.m. at the Linc, when the claws come out and the feathers fly.
