Bettors in the First State will still have to call their bookie to place an illegal wager after a sports-betting-legalization bill failed to pass.

A bill that would have allowed sports betting in the First State fell short Tuesday night.

The bill needed to clear a two-thirds majority vote in the Delaware House of Representatives. The bill fell two votes short with 23 votes in favor, 15 against and three abstentions, according to ESPN.com.

Gov. Jack Markell was all for sports betting in Delaware as a way to raise funds. He hoped to raise about $55 million to help shorten the state's large deficit.

Delaware is one of the few state's that could bring back legal professional sports betting because of a grandfather clause.
