Sports Betting in New Jersey Clears Hurdle

New Jersey Senate approves sports-betting bill

The state Senate has passed a measure that could clear the way for sports betting in the state.

Lawmakers cast their votes Tuesday afternoon.

The measure is the latest in a yearslong effort to authorize sports wagering and part of a push to boost the ailing casino and racetrack industries.

Democratic State Sen. Raymond Lesniak, of Union County, has authored the bill that partially repeals prohibition of sports betting.

The vote comes as Gov. Chris Christie is engaged in a legal battle with pro sports leagues and the NCAA.

Supporters of the measure suggest it could help the state's gambling industry. Four of Atlantic City's 12 casinos have closed this year.

The Assembly is expected to vote Thursday on the issue.
