Reid Sticks With Kolb if McNabb Can't Play

Kolb to get second career start if McNabb doesn't return

Kevin Kolb will make his second straight start for the Eagles if Donovan McNabb can't play against Kansas City.

Sticking with Kolb makes sense. It wasn't entirely his fault that the Saints tagged the Birds for 48 points. Even though two Saints TDs came off Kolb interceptions.

Kolb made his first NFL start Sunday, throwing for an impressive 391 yards, two TDs and three interceptions. Jeff Garcia, signed last week as insurance, was the backup.

Coach Andy Reid wasn't sure whether Garcia or Michael Vick would be the backup quarterback if McNabb remained out, he told reporters.

Vick is eligible to play Sunday for the first time after serving a two-game suspension as the final league penalty for his role in running a dogfighting ring.

McNabb was on the mend with a cracked rib and missed the Birds 48-22 loss. He was injured in the season opener at Carolina. He didn't practice last week and was ruled out 90 minutes before kickoff.

Don't expect the Birds to rush McNabb back onto the field this week. With a bye week on the horizon the following week and the lowly Chiefs in town the Birds probably can afford to give No. 5 an extra week off.

D-Mac sure didn't sound ready to play when he spoke Monday.

"I feel pretty good, better than last Monday," McNabb said. "It's one day at a time. I think there is a process that is going on, and the progression makes you feel confident that things are going to be better... I'm looking forward to being back out on the field."
