Califf Brings Veteran Leadership to the Union

Defender coming back to MLS

U.S. National Team veteran Danny Califf joined the Union Thursday.

Califf, 29, adds defensive expertise to the mostly young expansive team. He has played 23 games with the national team and also has played internationally – most recently for FC Midtjylland in the Danish Superliga.

“With a seasoned veteran like Califf, we’re adding a player who will help us set the bar ever higher,” Philadelphia Team Manager Peter Nowak said. “Danny understands the level of commitment our Technical Staff will demand daily and we’re counting on him to not only help anchor our defense but push our younger players to greater heights too.”

Califf still knows a thing or two about winning in the MLS. He played in three championships with the LA Galaxy.

Califf understands his veteran role.

“At this point in my career -- being a veteran -- I’m quite comfortable being asked to take on a leadership role,” said Califf. “I am so excited to work with American kids, who like me, have come through the U.S. National Team system. I’m sure we’ll relate well to one another for the benefit of Philadelphia Union.”

The Union also made a move in the booth Thursday. Play-by-play announcer JP Dellacamera was signed to call Union games.
