R.I.P Werth's Beard — Again

Amidst personal, team slump Werth shaves it off

Beard Watch 2010 is over.

Phillies All-Star outfielder Jayson Werth has shaved his magnificent facial hair, for the second time this spring.

Phillies writer Todd Zolecki Tweeted: “Jayson Werth has shaved his beard. He's got the old look going again.”

It looks like the folks worshipping Werth’s beard will have to pack away the ZZ-Top look and beard shirts for another day.

Werth’s motivation for shaving it off could be due to his recent struggles at the plate.

Werth went 0-fer Wednesday night as the Phillies dropped another game. After the game Manager Charlie Manuel held a team meeting to get the Phightins back on track. The talk could have helped inspire Werth to do something else as well -- trim back his beard.

Werth emerged from the locker room without his beard, according to Zolecki.

This isn't the first time Werth cut off his beard amidst a slump. He did the same thing during spring training.

The right fielder’s slump has mirrored the Phillies inability to score runs recently as Werth has gone 2-for-14 with only one extra base hit and one run during the well-publicized Phillies’ scoring drought, which includes three shutouts (two straight versus the rival Mets). They have only scored three runs in their last 38 innings at the plate -- at least Werth scored one of those runs.

Guess Werth wasn't actually growing a Flyers playoff beard.

Manuel brushed off the beard holding much power as he confirmed Jayson' shaving it off.

"Manuel with media --- Q: 'Werth shaved his beard. Think that'll help?' A: 'Whatever. Samson had long hair,'" Delco Times' Chris Vito Tweeted.

But, don't worry about Werth being totally clean cut. He left his trademark soul patch/goatee in place.
