Clinching Will Have to Wait

Hamels not sharp as Phillies fall to Mets 7-3

The perfect ending to a perfect season of sold-out crowds at Citizens Bank Park didn’t happen Sunday as the Phillies chance to clinch their fourth-straight National League East crown came up short.

Carlos Beltran hit a pair of homers, David Wright also connected and the Mets beat Philadelphia 7-3 on Sunday.

Cole Hamels (12-11) lasted only 4-plus innings in his shortest start since June 1. He allowed nine hits, three walks and struck out only two while giving up five earned runs.

The Mets seem to have King Cole’s number. He went 0-4 against New York this year.

“Just one of those days where I wasn't able to locate and be consistent,” Hamels said. “Sometimes it happens. With the way I've been pitching, I know I can correct it and get it back on track.”

The two-time defending NL champions came in needing a win and a loss by Atlanta to secure the division crown. The Braves lost 4-2 to Washington, dropping Philadelphia's magic number to one.

The only runs for the Phightins came care of Chase Utley’s three-run homer.

Despite the loss the Phils are still 19-5 in September and have a six-game lead over the Braves.

“They're going to celebrate sooner or later,” said Beltran. “We just wanted to win some games here.”

The Phillies will finish the season on the road with three games at Washington and three at Atlanta. They hope to clinch Monday night when ace Roy Halladay takes the hill in D.C.
