Phillies Come Up Empty in Mets Series

The Phillies failed to score a run in three straight games for the first time since 1983 as the Mets shut them out 3-0 to take the series on a dreary Thursday night.

Cole Hamels pitched well, but the Phils once again couldn’t muster any offense against the Mets’ pitching.

Mets pitcher Mike Pelfrey held the Phillies scoreless through seven innings, and the bullpen took over from there.

Jayson Werth even shaved his beard to spark some offense, but he still couldn’t turn things around for the fightins’.

"Big picture, a loss is a loss, no matter how you spin it. We're still in first place," Werth said.

Pelfrey got some help from his defense, as nearly every Mets fielder contributed by making outstanding plays all over the field.

Charlie Manuel held a closed-door meeting after Wednesday's game to share some “words of wisdom” with his struggling squad. But apparently, that was about as effective as Werth's clippers.

"If I could fix it, we'd never lose," Manuel said.

The last time the Mets swept the Phils in three straight was 2006. The only the Mets shutout the Phillies was in 1969 -- Jamie Moyer's the only player on either roster who was even alive at that point.
