Pedro Martinez was ready to join the Phillies for the stretch run after he passed his physical Tuesday, according to reports.
The righty got a clear bill of health Tuesday afternoon, according to Yahoo News. The 37-year-old Dominican will reportedly sign a deal with the Phils Wednesday, Yahoo reported.
The three-time Cy Young winner arrived to Philadelphia Airport late Monday night and told NBC Philadelphia’s John Clark that he was happy to have an opportunity to be on a winning team.
Martinez said that his mind is more focused on baseball now than it was in the past couple of years. Citing surgery and his father’s death as reasons he has been distracted, Martinez said that he hopes he can bring whatever help the Phils need “to make it to the final lap.”
Rumors were flying for days about Pedro’s return and a possible $4 million deal with the Phillies.
Despite his incredible record of 2.91 ERA and .684 winning percentage over 17 Major League seasons, Martinez didn't get a contract to start the season.
Last season with the Mets, Martinez had a 5.61 ERA in the 20 games he pitched.
The details of the deal Martinez will reportedly sign remained unknown Tuesday night.
