Phils Extend GM Amaro

The man who has served as general manager during a pretty decent era of Phillies baseball has been given a four-year extension.

With Ruben Amaro Jr, at the helm, the Phillies have posted the best record in the National League, 190-134.  The team has gone to the playoffs in both years of Amaro's service, and was recognized as the Organization of the Year by the magazine Baseball America.

Amaro, 46, has been in the Phillies' front office since 1999, when he started as assistant GM under Ed Wade.  He played for the Phillies in the 90's.

The news comes in the same week that it was announced that Charlie Manuel was given a raise and a contract extension.  Manuel will earn close to $4 million this year, making him one of the highest-paid managers in professional baseball.
