Patriots Sign Silver Medal Speedster Demps: Report

Demps was a member of the U.S.' silver medal winning 4x100 relay team

A gold medal got gymnast Gabby Douglas on the cover of Corn Flakes two weeks ago.

Sprinter Jeff Demps' silver medal may have earned him a contract with the New England Patriots.

After he skipped the draft last year to focus on track, Demps has reportedly signed a contract with the Pats, the NFL Network said on Friday. Demps scored 23 touchdowns and ran for 2,470 yards in four years as a Florida Gator running back and kick returner from 2008-11.

With injuries to their backfield, the Patriots now have another Danny Woodhead-type back who can return, run and catch. Demps was a member of the U.S.' silver medal winning 4x100 relay team and has more than enough speed to make up for his diminutive 5-foot-7, 190-pound frame. He will most likely be used as a return man, a role he flourished at in college, averaging 28.8 yards per kickoff return.

The NFL Network also reported that Jets backup quarterback and former teammate Tim Tebow tried to recruit Demps, but he opted for New England instead.
