Penn State's QB Takes Responsibility for Fight

PSU QB McGloin's status in question for bowl game after suffering concussion in fight with teammate

Penn State could be without their on-field leader in their bowl game next month.

Nittany Lions quarterback Matt McGloin's availability for the TicketCity Bowl on Jan. 2 is in question after the junior suffered a concussion and seizure after a locker-room scuffle with receiver Curtis Drake.

McGloin said Monday the argument Saturday with Drake from the practice field about a missed route carried over to the locker room. McGloin called it a “freak accident” after hitting his head on a concrete floor.

"I'm willing to take full responsibility for it," McGloin said at bowl media day on Monday. "I started it but as a quarterback for this university I should be held to a higher standard. It should not have happened. I should've walked away from it. It was just two guys who are emotional about the game who got into an argument."

So will the No. 24 team in the country be without McGloin against Houston?

“There is internal discipline, which has to do with our football team,” said intermin coach Tom Bradley. “Student Affairs will also deal with this since the campus police were contacted and we had to have an ambulance come down here. We will have to let the process take its course just like any other student.”

McGloin said he's passed the mental portion of a concussion test, but he's not back to where he should be physically in terms of balance and vision. Doctors must clear McGloin before determining his status for the bowl, Bradley said.

Bradley also said he talked to Drake and that the incident.

“They are both disappointed with themselves,” Bradley said. “It carried over into the locker room and it shouldn't have. The funny thing is they are good friends. I can tell you from past experience, usually when these things happen, the guys are up at dinner laughing and joking about it.”
