Flyers Keep “Leights Out” in Net

Flyers keep Leighton between the pipes

The Flyers have found the guy to key the “Leights out” on the opponent for the next couple seasons.

Playoff hero Michael Leighton signed a deal to stay with the Fly Guys, NBC Philadelphia Sports has learned.

The details of the contract weren’t released but TSN reported the two-year deal was worth $3.1 million.

"I'm very excited for the opportunity to come back to the Flyers organization for two more years," said Leighton to the Flyers website. "It was my intention all along. This is what I wanted. I really enjoy playing here, my teammates, the organization and the fans are so passionate. I just think it is a good fit for me."

Leighton was a waiver-wire steal for the 2009/10 Flyers. He would post an impressive 16-5-2 record with a 2.48 goals-against average in the regular season.

The 29-year-old journeyman would take over for injured Brian Boucher in the Eastern Conference semifinals and go on to post an 8-2-4 record with a 2.46 GAA in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

He posted an amazing three shutouts in the Conference Finals against Montreal but wasn't as sharp in the Finals against the Blackhawks.

"We are pleased to have Michael under contract for the next two seasons," said general manager Paul Holmgren to philadelphiaflyers.com. "Michael came to our team in December last year and played extremely well for us in the regular season and the playoffs. Michael is an athletic goalie who we feel is just coming into his own as an NHL goaltender and we look forward to Michael building on the level of play he established this past season."
