Former Flyers Captain Smith Retires

Former Flyers captain Jason Smith is hanging up his skates.

The 35-year-old defenseman made the announcement Wednesday in Ottawa.

A tough guy, Smith was named the Flyers captain before the 2007-08 season -- his first season in Philly. He played 77 games for the Fly Guys and helped lead the team to the Eastern Conference Finals.

But Smith's stay in Philly was short lived. He signed with the Senators prior to last season.

He retired after skating in more than one thousand NHL games. During his career in New Jersey, Toronto, Edmonton, Philadelphia and Ottawa, Smith recorded 41 goals and 128 assists with 1,099 penalty minutes. He also appeared in 68 playoff games, earning 11 points.

A native of Calgary he captained the Oilers for five seasons before captaining the Flyers.
