Hamels Rocked for 1st Time This Spring

Lefty gives up six earned runs in just 4 innings

So much for Cole Hamels’ impressive spring.

The Phils No. 1 lefty was rocked by the New York Yankees Monday but the Phillies still pulled out a 9-7 victory.

Hamels, who entered the day with a 1.69 ERA in three spring starts, allowed seven runs (six earned) and nine hits in four innings. His spring ERA jumped to 4.91.

Hamels wasn’t alone in stinking it up. New York right-hander A.J. Burnett allowed five earned runs in four innings of work.

The Phightins stayed in the game thanks to five innings of combined scoreless relief from David Herndon, Antonio Bastardo and Michael Stutes.

The Phils tagged Yanks pitcher Phil Hughes for four runs to pull out the win. Infielder Wilson Valdez hit a two-run, walk-off home run to win it.

Other Phillies contributing at the plate included Placido Polanco and Dane Sardinha who both hit their first homers of the spring and Ben Francisco who also went yard.

Ryan Howard, Polanco and Sardinha all had two hits for the Phillies while Mark Teixeira led New York by going 4 for 4 with a home run and a double.
