Girls Get Go-Ahead On Indiana High School Teams

Remember in high school, when you were a slightly sexist, immature person, and you were convinced girls should never play sports with boys? They were too "weak," you thought. Too "fragile." You didn't want to make them cry. Truly, how chivalrous you were.

Those days are over, friend, at least in Indiana. High school females used to have to get a waiver signed to be afforded the rare honor of wasting their time at football practice after school with a bunch of dudes. Now? No more. After a lawsuit, the Indiana High School Athletics Association made a decision to allow girls to try out for the boys baseball team and any other boys squad that doesn't have a female equivalent. It's not exactly Brown v. Board of Education, but, you know, it's something. 

Here's one question: What about boys trying out for girls' teams? Say the best baseball player in the school showed up to the softball field for tryouts and killed the ball all over the diamond. Does he not get to play? Does the rule work both ways? Not that it necessarily needs to, but where's the distinction there? Maybe we're just upset we never got to fulfill our dream of one day becoming an all-state volleyball player, but it is worth pondering, no?

Anyway, females of Indiana, now's your chance. Get out there and show your skills to the world. Because there's no better way to make a point about feminism than to wear pads and a helmet and stand around on a football sideline. Woo! Hear us roar!
