Giles and Park: Helping the Phils Turn Things Around

Marcus Giles tomahawked his former team as the Phillies stomped division rival Atlanta 7-3 on Sunday in Grapefruit League action.

Newly acquired Marcus Giles knocked in a pair of runs on two hits and scored once as Chan Ho Park picked up his first win as a Philadelphia Phillie.

Giles, the former All-Star second baseman for the Braves, hasn’t played in the major since 2007 but he was a low-risk gamble for the Phils who picked up the veteran second basemen to fill in for Chase Utley until he is fully recovered after his November hip surgery.

Chan Ho Park came in relief of Brett Myers who gave up three hits and two runs in three innings on the hill. Although Myers is thirty pounds lighter upon his arrival to Clearwater (light beer and a lean cuisine?), what that means to his game remains unclear after Sunday’s shaky performance.

Park looked a bit better allowing only one run, a solo homer to Brian McCann.

Eric Bruntlett also had a pair of hits and Carlos Ruiz matched Giles with two RBI’s.

After dropping the first three games of spring training, Philadelphia has now won two in a row.

Ho-ld on, it’s just Grapefruit League action. Sure, it’s sweet that Park earned the win and Giles offensive numbers aren’t bad, but the season is still a month away. Even so, it’s a nice start as the Phillies continue to look for an arm to fill the fifth starter slot and although Giles is producing, it’s one day closer to the return of Utley.
