Politicians Get Into a Flyers Betting Frenzy

Mayors, Attorneys wager food, service, and embarrassment

The Flyers are in the Cup Final and that means plenty of things -- especially friendly wagers between city leaders.

Philly Mayor Michael Nutter bet Chicago Mayor Richard Daley that the Flyers will beat the Black Hawks in the Stanley Cup Final. The prize -- community service and freshly grown food for the less fortunate.

Mayor Daley’s wager is a little less committal. His bet includes food, but no community service.

When the Flyers win -- go team -- Nutter will volunteer time with a community garden organized by the Mayor’s Office of Sustainability. All food grown will be donated to Philabundance. While Daley will give Philly a variety of Chicago products, mostly food, but also drinks, books, T-shirts, and flowers, all of which will be donated to local charities.

“I look forward not only to watching the Flyers win the Stanley Cup but to volunteering in a community garden and donating the produce to Philabundance,” said Nutter.

In the unfortunate event of a Flyers loss, Nutter will still volunteer, but the Greater Chicago Food Depository will get the produce.

Not to be left out of the fun. Philly U.S. Rep. Bob Brady bet Chicago-area counterpart Rep. Daniel Lipinksi some cheesesteaks for pizza. And the losing Congressman will need to wear the other guy's team's jersey on the House floor, according to Politico.

And wagering isn't exclusive to lawmakers. Philly District Attorney Seth Williams also made a bet with Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez that involves some public embarrassment.

If the Flyers win, Alvarez will wear our beloved Orange and Black while sliding down the famous Chicago Picasso sculpture and running a 5K race for charity. Philly will also get a dozen deep dish pizzas from Chicago’s famous pizzerias.

If the Cup goes to Chicago, Williams will be running up the Art Museum steps 12 times in a Black Hawks jersey and he’ll be wearing the jersey for an entire day while doing community service.  He’ll will also toss in a dozen cheesesteaks from Jim’s Steaks.

Let’s hope he doesn’t give away any of our cheese whiz.
