Flyers Captain Needs Shoulder Surgery

Mike Richards goes under the knife Friday

Flyers captain Mike Richards will go under the knife Friday to repair his injured right shoulder.

The 24-year-old center will have a torn labrum fixed, said Flyers General Manager Paul Holmgren.

The surgery announcement came just a day after Richards was named a finalist for the Selke Trophy -- an award given to the NHL's best defensive forward. His seven short-handed goals certainly helped gain him that honor.

Richards was second on the team this season with 80 points during the regular season -- he tallied 30 goals and 50 assists.

The Flyers season ended in a first-round NHL playoff defeat to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Richards put up a goal and four assists in six games against Philly's cross-state rivals.

No word yet on how long it will take for Richards to recover from surgery.
