Former Flyers Player Accused of Assaulting High School Hockey Player

Authorities said a former Philadelphia Flyers player who won a Stanley Cup with the New Jersey Devils and now coaches a high school team in his home state has been accused of kicking a 16-year-old player in the back.

A complaint filed against Dowd in Wall Township court said that a parent filed the charge over an incident that allegedly occurred last Wednesday when the team played Red Bank Regional at the Jersey Shore Arena in Wall.

A hearing in Wall Township Municipal Court scheduled for Tuesday was postponed. A message left with Dowd's attorney wasn't immediately returned.

Manasquan School Superintendent Frank Kasyan said it was best to relieve Dowd of his coaching duties of the Manasquan/Point Pleasant Beach varsity hockey team during the investigation.

Dowd, a native of Brick, New Jersey, played 73 games with the Flyers in the 2007-2008 season — his last season after playing 17 seasons in the NHL, including multiple stops with the New Jersey Devils.
