Eagles' Hobbs Done for Season

Eagles put cornerback Hobbs on IR with neck injury

Eagles cornerback and kick returner Ellis Hobbs is done for the season with a neck injury suffered in Sunday night's loss to Dallas.

Hobbs was placed on injured reserve Wednesday and will require surgery. The surgery should allow Hobbs to play again, Eagles coach Andy Reid said.

The Eagles acquired Hobbs in a draft-day trade in April, sending a pair of fifth-rounders to the Patriots in exchange for the five-year veteran.

The hope was that Hobbs could not only back up Asante Samuel and Sheldon Brown at cornerback but that he could add something on special teams.

Hobbs recorded 14 tackles in eight games as a backup. He also averaged 24.1 yards on 20 kickoff returns with a long of 63. An improvement from the Eagles’ 2008 kick return average (23.5).

The Eagles were already short at defensive back as Dimitri Patterson only appeared in three games as he struggled with injuries for most of the season.

To replace Hobbs the Eagles signed free agent cornerback Ramzee Robinson, who was among Detroit's final cuts in September. "Mr. Irrelevant" was the final pick of the 2007 draft.
