Derby Dreams Dashed the Old Fashioned Way

Ex-Derby favorite fractures knee, finishes second

Old Fashioned, a former Kentucky Derby favorite, is out of that race after suffering a knee fracture in the Arkansas Derby, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

The horse, owned by Wilmington's Rick Porter and trained by Delaware Park-based Larry Jones, finished second despite the injury but won't run for the roses.

"We do not feel like anything is life-threatening," Jones told the Inquirer. "We don't even know if it is career-ending."

The slab fracture -- when the front breaks off a carpal bone -- was detected when handlers noticed the horse walking funny in the barn after the race. He will be taken to Lexington, Ky., to be examined by vet Larry Bramlage.

Jones was the trainer for Eight Belles, the filly who finished second at last year's Derby but had to be put down after suffering injuries while galloping out after the race.
