Coach Calhoun Hospitalized

Coach Jim Calhoun finished a 50-mile bike ride Saturday, even though he had five broken ribs.

The UConn Head Basketball coach was riding in his NBC 30 Jim Calhoun Cancer Challenge Ride in Simsbury, when at one point during the race, he hit a pothole and flipped over the bicycle.

Calhoun got back up and continued to ride, but soon after he crossed the finish line, he collapsed.

The Hall of Fame coach was rushed to UConn Health Center, where an examination found five broken ribs.

Maureen McGuire, a spokesperson for the UConn Health Center, says Calhoun is listed in good condition. McGuire said he will spend the night in the hospital as a precaution.

Calhoun, 67, is a two-time cancer survivor and started the Jim Calhoun Cancer Challenge Ride to raise money for cancer research.
