Brett Favre's Sext Scandal Is Over

It was nearly one month ago that Deadspin.com (FULL DISCLOSURE: I work there) broke the story of Vikings QB Brett Favre sending lewd text messages to TV host and glamorized shooter girl Jenn Sterger. In the ensuing maelstrom, we all figured the NFL would hand down some kind of judgment on the old Land Baron. Maybe a small fine. Perhaps a suspension, if it could be proved that the Jets aided Favre in helping him harass a team employee.

But all of those imagined punishments were dependent upon Sterger fully cooperating with the NFL. And, despite her Versus TV show being cancelled, Sterger apparently has no interest in ever formally talking about the matter with the NFL, or apparently anyone else.

Jenn Sterger was tentatively set to talk with NFL this week in the Favre matter, but it's not happening. The league has a standing request.

The NFL, of course, isn’t some law enforcement entity. They can’t force Sterger to discuss the matter, and she’s given no inkling that she plans on doing so. It’s actually quite stunning, when you think about it. Usually, someone like Sterger would have already done the talk show circuit by now. Instead, she’s kept quiet about the whole affair, and even refused to discuss it on her own TV show (I’m sure that pleased the Versus brass to no end).

So there’s little the NFL can do about a private matter that both sides would like to keep private. Don’t expect Favre to be fined or suspended. The only way the league can maybe get around to punishing him is if they see the texts he allegedly sent to two of the Jets massage therapists, but those alleged texts have yet to surface and may not, pending whatever legal action the pair is considering against Favre (the pair have retained lawyers).

Favre is going to get away clean on this one, and will able to play out the rest of this season. Whether that’s great news for a 2-5 Vikings team is another story.
