The Eagles went on the defensive Monday when they officially added former Cowboys coach Brian Stewart as special assistant to the Eagles defense.

Stewart comes to Philly from the enemy. He spent the last two seasons as Dallas' defensive coordinator where he helped lead the Boys to a league-high 59 sacks in 2008.

Signing Stewart gives the Eagles an experienced NFC East defensive mind in case Defensive Coordinator Jim Johnson is unable to return from his medical leave.

“Stewart brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to our football club,” said Eagles head coach Andy Reid. “He especially has a good understanding of the NFC East acquired during his time with the Cowboys. He’ll be a nice addition to our coaching staff.”

The plan is for Stewart to work predominately with the defensive secondary but don't be surprised for him to help interim defense coordinator Sean McDermott who was promoted from secondary coach.

The hope still remains that Johnson will come back to the Birds from cancer but this move allows the Eagles wiggle room in case he doesn't.
