Bears Draft YouTube Phenomenon

Can you do this in a pool?

Call him a late bloomer.  Now San Jose State defensive lineman can be called the newest Chicago Bear.  Drafted with the fourth pick in the third round, Jarron Gilbert becomes the Bears top pick this year after trading away their first day selections.

"Last night when we reconvened with the scouts and our coaches we felt we had four players, really three that we were comfortable with, "  Jerry Angelo said Sunday.  "One of them obviously, Gilbert, was there and we were really happy about that".

Gilbert's father Daren played offensive tackle for the New Orleans Saints and advised his son "control what you can control."  The fifth year senior from San Jose State did just that exploding onto the scene this past year and playing in the college all star game.   But what jumps out at most is the athleticism he carries on a 6'5" frame.

Gilbert Pool Jump

The younger Gilbert was told about how former Rams and Bears safety Adam Archuleta could jump out of a pool, so Gilbert tried it at a teammates apartment pool after a summer workout.  He did it on the first try.

That kind of athleticism is reminiscent of another Defensive tackle the Bears drafted on April 30, 1985.  Drafted 22nd overall, William "the Refrigerator" Perry was shown jumping up onto a 3 foot end table to show the Aiken S.C. native's athleticism as well.  "It was pre-combine days" says former Bear teammate Emery Moorehead

But the legend grew to a point where Perry would brag he could dunk a basketball.  Until his new Bear teammates challenged him to do just that after practice at the old Lake Forest College.  He didn't.  Or wouldn't.  Doesn't matter he did enough on the field his rookie year helping the Bears to the Super Bowl.  Something the 2009 Bears would be happy if Jarron Gilbert could do this year, too.
