Eagles Trade Up in 2nd Round to Take CB Eric Rowe

A day after addressing one of their two biggest needs by drafting wide receiver Nelson Agholor in the first round, the Eagles addressed their next biggest need by taking Utah cornerback Eric Rowe in the second round.

The Eagles traded up with the Dolphins, moving from No. 52 to No. 47, to draft Rowe (see bio). The Eagles shipped No. 52 and both their fifth-round picks –- No. 145 and No. 156 -– to the Dolphins in exchange for No. 47 and a sixth-round pick, No. 191 overall.

Rowe played both safety and cornerback at Utah. He was a three-year starter at safety before moving to cornerback as a senior.

Rowe is the first cornerback the Eagles have taken in the first two rounds since Lito Sheppard and Sheldon Brown in the first and second rounds in 2002.

In the last 40 years, the only other corners they’ve taken in the first two rounds are Roynell Young in the first round in 1980, Eric Allen in the second round in 1988 and Bobby Taylor in the second round in 1995.

The Eagles signed former Seahawk Byron Maxwell as a free agent during the offseason after cutting ties with both their starting corners from last year – Bradley Fletcher and Cary Williams.

Brandon Boykin, Nolan Carroll and Walter Thurmond are the other veteran corners on the roster, so Rowe – assuming the Eagles keep him at safety – will have an opportunity to earn a starting spot as a rookie.
