Flyers Snider Is HOF Bound

Comcast-Spectacor chairman and Flyers founder Ed Snider keeps searching for that elusive third Stanley Cup but his work towards taking an expansion-franchise and making the Flyers into a perennial powerhouse in the NHL has earned him a spot in his third Hall of Fame.

On Monday, Snider was announced as one of the newest members of the United States Hockey Hall of Fame in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Snider joins longtime NHL players Chris Chelios, Keith Tkachuk and Gary Suter along with play-by-play announcer Mike Emrick in the 2011 class.

“It’s an extraordinary class,” said Ron DeGregorio, president of USA Hockey. "The varied contributions to the landscape of hockey in our country is truly amazing and, collectively, this class has positively impacted every level of hockey."

The Flyers have only missed the playoffs eight times since Snider bought the team to Philadelphia in 1967.

The Flyers won the Cup in 1974 and 75. The Orange and Black have reached the Cup Finals six other times (1976, 1980, 1985, 1987, 1997 and 2010) but lost each time.

"I have seen our city grow from a very few people knowing what a puck was to 2 million people at each of our Stanley Cup parades," Snider said. "Philadelphia now, in my opinion, is a top-notch hockey town."

As well as his commitment towards winning hockey, Snider was also lauded by the Hall for his work in the community including the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation.

Snider is already a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame (1988) and Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame (1985).

A formal induction will take place this fall.
