Two NJ Dems Battle to Stay in Congress

Reps. Rothman, Pascrell face first test in newly redrawn district

Update: U.S. Rep. Bill Pascrell has won a hard-fought battle of incumbents, besting fellow congressman Steve Rothman in the Democratic primary in New Jersey's newly drawn 9th District.

With 90 percent of precincts reporting Tuesday, Pascrell had 64 percent of the vote in the district, which includes portions of Bergen, Hudson and Passaic counties.

In a concession speech, Rothman called Pascrell his friend and said he would help the Democratic ticket in November.

The two ended up in a rare incumbent vs. incumbent campaign because districts were redrawn this year. The winner is almost certain to prevail in November in the heavily Democratic district.

Rabbi Shmuley Boteach won the Republican nomination. The rabbi is a TV personality who authored the book ``Kosher Sex'' and was a onetime spiritual adviser to Michael Jackson.

Two Democratic congressmen were locked Tuesday in New Jersey's marque primary race.

Reps. Steve Rothman and Bill Pascrell battled each other for the right to stay in Congress and represent the newly drawn 9th District in Bergen, Hudson and Passaic counties.

They ended up in a rare incumbent vs. incumbent campaign because districts were reconfigured this year and New Jersey is losing a seat.

The 59-year-old Rothman and the 75-year-old Pascrell are in their eighth terms. The winner is almost certain to prevail in November in the heavily Democratic district.

Pascrell was backed by former president Bill Clinton. President Obama appeared with Rothman.

Rabbi Shmuley Boteach was in a three-way battle for the nomination on the Republican side. The celebrity rabbi is a TV personality who authored the book "Kosher Sex" and was a former spiritual adviser to Michael Jackson.
