Twittter's Most Popular Politicians

Who’s getting the most attention on social media

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie gets a lot of media coverage, but his tweets don’t command the kind of audience some other prominent Republicans and popular Democrats are boasting.

It may not be surprising that President Barack Obama has amassed the most Twitter followers. On Wednesday, the White House held the first town hall via Twitter.

Vice President Joe Biden recently announced he's tweeting, just in time to salute the troops on Independence Day. He pulled in over 20,000 followers in less than a week.

In a top ten list compiled by TheHill.com the president’s 9,042,615 followers put him in the number one position.

The number ten spot goes to former Republican California U.S. Senate nominee Carly Fiorina, with a following of 370,115.

In between, there’s a variety of current and former officer-holders and presidential candidates past and present.

For the record, NJ Gov. Christie has 45,869 followers. Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett recently joined the twitter nation and has attracted a group of 665. Delaware Gov. Jack Markell has 3,225.

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter’s been actively tweeting and his followers number 10,578.

Now, back to the top ten. Here’s how TheHill.com’s list shapes up:

1. President Barack Obama (9,042,784)
2. Former Vice President Al Gore (2,258,139)
3. Former Calif. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (2,082,604)
4. Sen. John McCain (1,726,354)
5. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (1,325,931)
6. Calif. Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom (1,301,805)
7. Calif. Gov. Jerry Brown (1,089,810)
8. Newark, NJ Mayor Cory Booker (1,085,902)
9. Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (591,623)
10. Former Calif. Republican nominee for U.S. Senate Carly Fiorina (370,113)

The politicos and some would-be politicians are increasingly using Twitter and Facebook to spread their message to wider audiences, faster than some more traditional forms of messaging permitted.
