Fed Money for NJ Storm Debris Removal Approved

Municipalities can get 75 percent of cost back for removing debris on private properties

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie says federal money has been approved to reimburse local governments that remove storm debris from private property.

Christie says local governments in all 21 counties can apply for FEMA to reimburse 75 percent of the cost of municipal debris removal conducted on private property.

Participating county or municipal governments will have to cover the remaining 25 percent of the cost.

Christie said Thursday the program is an important step in helping New Jersey residents psychologically recover from Superstorm Sandy by seeing physical evidence of the storm removed from their communities.

The program only covers debris removal conducted by local governments on private property.

Debris removal contracted for or conducted by private individuals is not eligible for reimbursement through the program.
