Protests Over Education Cuts Flood Pa. Capitol

Students and supporters of colleges and Philly schools attend rallies

The Capitol is flooding with students and education advocates from around Pennsylvania pressing their cause and protesting Gov. Tom Corbett's proposed fund ing cuts for public schools and universities.

Rallies planned Tuesday include separate events by supporters of Philadelphia public schools, Penn State, Pitt and community colleges on a session day for lawmakers.

Republicans who control the Legislature say they expect their counterproposal to Corbett will include a higher funding figure for the universities.

However, Corbett and his fellow Republicans are trying to address a multibillion-dollar, recession-fueled deficit without raising taxes, and it's not clear where they'll find additional money.

Corbett proposed slashing more than $1.6 billion for public schools and universities, including a 50 percent reduction for the 14 state-owned universities, as well as Penn State, Pitt, Temple and Lincoln.
