Plea Agreement for Ex-Pa. Sen. Mellow

Veteran former lawmaker to plead guilty April 27

A former Democratic leader of the Pa. State Senate is scheduled to plead guilty April 27 to charges that he misused Senate staff and resources for political fundraising and campaigning.

Federal prosecutors charged former senator Robert Mellow last week with conspiracy to commit mail fraud and filing a false income tax return.

He signed a plea agreement and faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison.

His plea hearing will take place in Philadelphia.

The 69-year-old Mellow served 40 years in the state Senate and was among that chamber's most powerful members when he announced his retirement two years ago.
