Philly School District Fights Ruling Sparing Teachers From Costs

Philadelphia's school district is appealing a judge's decision barring it from unilaterally imposing health care costs on unionized teachers.

The district filed the appeal in state Commonwealth Court a day after Judge Nina Wright Padilla made permanent an injunction halting the district's plans.

The union says that ruling emphasized new working conditions be worked out in the collective bargaining sessions they've been having for more than a year.

The union went to court after the School Reform Commission canceled their contract Oct. 6.

Commissioners say the cash-strapped district can't afford the agreement and its free health benefits. They want to impose new terms that would cost teachers up to $140 per month.

They say that'll save $44 million this year and $200 million over four years.
