Philadelphia's New Budget Cuts

Philadelphia’s budget woes are far from over.

Wednesday, Mayor Michael Nutter announced a new round of budget cuts for the city. A major reason is sagging property tax revenue.

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Nutter's revised budget for 2010-11 includes substantial cuts to the police and fire overtime budgets, as well as reductions to most other city departments.

"The cuts are very broad, they affect every department and agency. But we tried to make sure they were not so deep as to decimate departments and have a significant impact on service delivery, said the Mayor."

Nutter canceled a previously announced $2.5 million cut to the library system. It would have reduced services at branch libraries to four days a week.

Nutter is using excess money received through the recent tax-amnesty program to preserve library services, which were slashed during previous rounds of cuts.

In May, the city made a total of $47 million in cuts.

The latest round of budget cuts have been submitted to the city's fiscal watchdog group, the Pennsylvania Intergovernmental Cooperation Authority. It has 30 days to review the plan.
