Philadelphia Teachers Approve Contract

Philadelphia's teachers union has approved a three-year contract.

The Philadelphia Federation of Teachers approved the pact by a vote of 1,831 to 885 on Thursday night.

The contract for the 17,000-member union runs through August 2012. It includes two across-the-board raises of 3 percent -- one in September and a second in January 2012.

The agreement was reached Tuesday.

Superintendent Arlene Ackerman has scheduled a news conference for 10 a.m. Friday.

The School Reform Commission will vote on the contract next week.

The union's previous contract had expired in August 2008. But teachers had continued to work under five extensions.

Philadelphia has more than 161,000 students in district schools and another 33,000 in charter schools.
