Philly's Managing Director Steps Aside

Barnett to resign June 30

Philadelphia's managing director is resigning.

Dr. Camille Barnett announced her decision in a tearful news conference at City Hall on Wednesday. The resignation is effective June 30.

She needs time away from the public spotlight to rebuild her personal life after the death of her husband, who was killed in a car accident days before Nutter's inauguration in January 2008.

“My personal loss has caused me to reflect deeply on my life," Barnett said. "I need time and space to recover fully."

"I am not sure what I will do next -- but I know it will be good,” said Barnett.

“Philadelphia really has been the City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection for me. The city has helped me deal with the most difficult time in my life and I sincerely thank all Philadelphians.”

Barnett is second in command to Mayor Michael Nutter.

“I sincerely thank Dr. Barnett for her incredible service for the City of Philadelphia,” said Nutter. “Despite the tragedy that began her tenure here, she has performed to the highest standards."

"I wish her all the best in the next stage of her life.”

Barnett was credited with helping to set up the city's 311 non-emergency call system and creating a system to monitor the performance of city departments. But she also clashed with some members of the administration.

There has been no decision on her replacement, Nutter’s office said.
