NTSB to Determine Probable Cause of NJ Derailment

Nearly two years after a train derailed in South Jersey, federal investigators are expected to release a probable cause for the incident that left dozens sickened.

The National Transportation Safety Board is set to meet Tuesday morning to discuss the 2012 derailment and hazmat release in Paulsboro, New Jersey.

The meeting, which will take place in Washington, D.C., should finally put a probable cause on the wreck that sent Conrail tankers carrying a toxic chemical into the Mantua Creek on Nov. 30, 2012.

A ruptured tanker car released vinyl chloride when seven cars of an 84-car train derailed on or near a swivel-style bridge over Mantua Creek on Nov. 30.

The gas, used to make PVC plastic, led to the evacuation of more than 329 families and businesses. No one was seriously sickened, though dozens were checked out at a hospital.
