Pa. Gov. Corbett Delays Health Care Ruling Remarks

Republican governor is reviewing landmark health care decision

Gov. Tom Corbett's administration plans to comment after it reviews the U.S. Supreme Court's decision on President Barack Obama's historic health care overhaul.

Spokesman Kevin Harley said Thursday morning that Corbett will brief reporters later in the day.

As Pennsylvania's attorney general in 2010, Corbett joined a now-unsuccessful lawsuit seeking to overturn the provision that requires most Americans to have health insurance or pay a penalty.

Still, Corbett's administration is setting up a health insurance exchange required by the law in 2014.

An Insurance Department spokeswoman says the agency will watch to see how the decision affects the amount of state money necessary to operate the exchange, whether consumers would use it without government subsidies and whether the federal government would still underwrite its initial development.

Pa. Republicans say the Supreme Court decision “sets the stakes for the November election.”

“ObamaCare is simply wrong for America and wrong for Pennsylvania,” said a statement released by Republican Party of Pennsylvania Chairman Rob Gleason.

Here is the full statement from PA GOP:

“While we are extremely disappointed in today’s ruling, the Supreme Court decision sets the stakes for the November election. The only way to save the country from ObamaCare’s budget-busting government takeover of health care is to elect a new President,” Chairman Gleason said.

“Under ObamaCare, President Obama’s signature legislation, health care costs continue to skyrocket, and up to 20 million Americans could lose their employer-based coverage. Meanwhile, a panel of unelected bureaucrats now has the unprecedented authority to come between elderly patients and their doctors. ObamaCare is simply wrong for America and wrong for Pennsylvania. We need market-based solutions that give patients more choice, not less. The answer to rising health care costs is not, and will never be, Big Government.

“I applaud Governor Tom Corbett for his tireless efforts to fight against the federal government’s massive takeover of our healthcare system in Pennsylvania. The fight now turns to the White House. We must elect a president who understands the economy, respects free enterprise, and can provide the leadership we now so desperately need. On Election Day, we must elect Mitt Romney and put America on the path toward a brighter economic future and successful health care reform.”
