The recent election in Afghanistan serves as a brief respite from the health care debate on this Sunday’s talk shows.

Adm. Mike Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan Karl Eikenberry will be on both NBC’s “Meet the Press” and CNN’s “State of the Union” to discuss any potential fallout from the election.

NBC also has Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) and Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), while CNN brings on Sen. Richard Lugar (R-Ind.), Sen. Joseph Lieberman (I-Conn.) and Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.).

ABC’s “This Week” meanwhile hosts Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), one of the top foreign policy voices in his party, to provide his assessment of the situation in Afghanistan and evaluate the administration’s performance as it ramps up military involvement in the country.

Elsewhere, health care takes top billing.

CBS’s “Face the Nation” brings in two of the Senate’s top negotiators on health care, Republican Chuck Grassley of Iowa, and Democrat Kent Conrad of North Dakota, as well as former DNC Chairman Howard Dean. Sen. Arlen Specter (D-Pa.) and Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) head to "Fox News Sunday" where they’ll be joined by former White House faith-based initiative director Jim Towey.

C-SPAN’s “Newsmakers” has Scott Armstrong, president and CEO of the Group Health Cooperative, to take questions on the proposed Democratic overhaul of health care from David Lightman of McClatchy Newspapers and Noam Levey of the Los Angeles Times.

Finally, Bloomberg’s “Political Capital” lands Education Secretary Arne Duncan. who has been making the media rounds recently to discuss the federal government’s plan to fight the H1N1 virus once schools start back up in the fall.
