Embattled board members of the Philadelphia Housing Authority have voted to surrender control of the agency to the federal government for at least a year.
U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development officials had asked all five members to resign after the firing of longtime executive director Carl Greene last year and ensuing federal investigations into his long tenure.
Greene's firing came after news that the agency secretly agreed to pay nearly $900,000 to settle sexual harassment complaints against him.
Philadelphia City Council member Jannie Blackwell resigned from the board of the Philadelphia Housing Authority Wednesday. She was the only one to do it before today.
Former Mayor John Street has been the board's chairman in recent years and is among those resigning. The others include a city councilwoman, a labor leader, an elderly tenant representative and the wife of U.S. Rep. Bob Brady.
Street says “it's really time for us to go.”
