A new poll finds that 53 percent of New Jersey voters favor legalized sports betting at Atlantic City's casinos and the state's horse tracks.
The Fairleigh Dickinson University's PublicMind poll surveyed voters in advance of a November referendum on whether New Jersey residents should be allowed to bet on professional sports.
But even if the referendum passes, a federal ban on sports betting in all but four states would have to be overturned before people could start plunking down cash on the Jets, Giants or Eagles. A lawsuit filed by State Sen. Raymond Lesniak of Union Country aims to overturn the law, claiming it unconstitutionally treats states differently.
Thirty percent of poll respondents opposed sports betting, while 17 percent weren't sure. The poll has a sampling error margin of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
