NJ Judge to Take Up Carl Lewis Ballot Challenge Thursday

Lewis still campaigning while eligibility is decided.

Lawyers for Carl Lewis are trying to stop June primary ballots from being printed until a court decides whether the former Olympic medalist can run for state Senate.

Lawyer Bill Tambussi filed for an injunction after Secretary of State Kim Guadagno ruled Lewis ineligible to run. She said he didn't meet the four-year residency rule for candidates and ordered his name stricken from the ballot.

A federal judge has scheduled a hearing on the injunction request Thursday afternoon.

Lewis is challenging Guadagno's ruling in federal and state court. He says he'll keep campaigning while the legal battle goes on.

Lewis' candidacy was challenged by Republicans soon after the 49-year-old Willingboro native announced his intention to run as a Democrat for the state Senate seat representing the area where he grew up.
