Afghan Journos Fume at Colleagues' Death

A group of Afghan journalists say there's a double standard when it comes to Western and Afghan lives

A group of Afghan journalists say there's a double standard when it comes to Western and Afghan lives in the wake of a deadly rescue of a New York Times reporter who was held prisoner by Taliban captives.

The Associated Press reports that the group, the Media Club of Afghanistan, said the rescue of reporter Stephen Farrell is to blame for the death of his Afghan interpreter and reporter Sultan Munad. Munad was killed during a raid by British forces who were able to free Farrell, a dual Irish and English citizen.

The office of British Prime Minister Gordon Brown previously said that the attempt by troops to rescue both reporters was authorized as the "best chance of protecting life." The Afghan group said military forces acted too quickly and did not pursue all nonviolent options.

The group of reporters, who work with international news outlets, also condemned the Taliban for abducting the reporters who were investigating the deaths of several civilians following a German ordered NATO airstrike.
