Mayor Mack Wants to Stay in Office

The mayor of New Jersey's capital city says he should be allowed to remain in office until he's sentenced on corruption charges.

Trenton Mayor Tony Mack filed legal papers Monday on his own behalf, arguing that the state should not be allowed to immediately oust him. Citing outstanding motions in which he seeks a new trial, Mack claims his conviction is not "guaranteed."
 
Mack was convicted earlier this month of bribery, fraud and extortion.
 
Under state law, people convicted of corruption cannot continue to hold public office. But since Mack has refused to step down, the state has been forced to go to court to have him removed.

Mack is seeking a Wednesday morning court hearing on his request. A hearing on his removal is scheduled for later Wednesday.
