Markell Hangs Mezuzah

Del.'s 1st Jewish gov. hangs mezuzah at mansion

Something new will be greeting visitors to Delaware’s governor’s mansion -- a mezuzah.

Jack Markell, the first Jewish governor of the First State, hung a mezuzah at the mansion in Dover.

The small ornamental boxes containing a prayer scroll are commonly affixed to entrances of Jewish homes. Rabbi Peter Grumbacher affixed the mezuzah to a doorpost at Woodburn on Tuesday afternoon. Grumbacher is rabbi emeritus at Congregation Beth Emeth and has long been rabbi to the Markell family.

Markell, who took office last year, is not the first governor to hang a mezuzah.

In 2007, Florida Gov. Charlie Crist put one on his office door at the state capitol in Tallahassee.
